What Is Super-Speed Internet?

The name WINDS is like a play on words: it's a pun on "wind" in Japanese, which means "to blow," and an acronym for Wideband Internetworking for Distributed Systems. WINDS is part of a Japanese space initiative to provide Internet access to remote parts of Japan and Asia. The satellite will use Ka-band frequencies to deliver high-speed broadband services with an anticipated throughput of up to 100Gbps from its perch in geostationary orbit at around 35,000 km above the Earth's surface, about twice as high as the International Space Station orbits our planet.
