What Is Sub-Menu?

TechDogs Avatar

Sub-menus are like the kid you went to high school with who always got straight A's and made you feel bad about yourself. They're constantly there, doing their thing, and you're too busy doing yours to notice that they're pretty cool. Sub-menus are menus embedded within a top-level menu in graphical user interface systems. Users of everyday software environments such as Microsoft Windows have become accustomed to seeing controls for accessing sub-menus, usually invisible from the start screen. So next time you accidentally click on the "Delete" button instead of the "Save" button, remember: it's not your fault. Because you weren't paying attention to what was going on up there. You were busy thinking about all those other things. Ah, the sub-menu. What a beautiful thing. When you're in a rush and need to find something fast, losing your cool and clicking around aimlessly is easy. What if there was a better way? What if you could quickly find what you're looking for without going through all that clicking? That's where sub-menus come in! They let you dive deeper into an application or website with just one click and can also help you find your way back out again when you're done. Using a sub-menu involves a strategy of nesting one menu inside another. For instance, under the main menu titled "tools" or "options," there may be a sub-menu with a title like "format" or "insert," which has a list of options as well. Sub-menus have been around for a while. They're standard in Windows but can also be found in many other places, like video games and phone interfaces. Their work is simple: you click on a menu with your mouse, drag it down to a sub-menu row, and move the mouse to the right, usually called "dragging off" or "dragging down," and then the sub-menu appears. This has worked well for most people for a long time, but some users have trouble controlling their mice in this way. Developers also need help coding these operations carefully, so they don't cause bugs or errors.
