What Is Stand-Up Meeting?
Stand-up meetings are a great way to get everyone on the same page. The concept is simple: every day, everyone comes together to give a quick status update and then go about their day. The goal of this meeting is to raise any issues that may be slowing down the process of getting work done. These issues are called "blocks" in scrum parlance. It's also an opportunity for team members to ask questions they might have about what they're working on or what they should be working on next. This meeting is beneficial in an Agile method like Scrum, where you have smaller batches of work constantly moving through various stages. A stand-up meeting always starts with a question: "What did you do yesterday? " The team members are expected to share updates on the activities they did on the previous day, what tasks they planned to do on that day, any issues they faced on the last day and the plan for that day. The meeting is conducted when everyone is in one place, most often in the morning. It is so-called stand-up because team members are expected to remain standing during the meeting. The meeting length can be anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes. Stand-up meetings are a great way to keep your team focused on the task. The term "stand-up" comes from the practice of standing instead of sitting because the discomfort of standing up for an extended period keeps the meetings short. It is also why we recommend holding these meetings in a public place. You don't want anyone slipping into their thoughts or falling asleep! We're all busy. So let's keep stand-up meetings short and sweet. No one has time to sit around and talk about things that aren't relevant to the goals of the meeting. Each attendee should be prepared with a short list of topics they want to bring up. If you have a long list that will fit in 15 minutes, please send it in advance so we can prioritize it.
