What Is S3-D?

So you're looking at a picture of a tree. You see the tree's trunk, branches, and maybe even some leaves. Do you know how much time and effort it took to make that picture? It required three-dimensional (3-D) stereo technology (S3-D). This technique generates an illusion of depth in a moving image, separately displaying two offset images to the right and left eye of the observer. We've all seen those 3-D images that look like two-dimensional (2-D) images, but when you tilt your head, they pop out and become three-dimensional (3-D). If you're wondering how this works, it's because our brain is fantastic. Our eyes have retinal disparity - they send different signals to our brain based on where they perceive an image on the screen to be located. So when we look at an idea that a certain amount of pixels has offset, our brain interprets this as being in 3-D. It synthesizes the two offset images together into one 3-D image. This process works because we have two eyes - each eye sees something slightly different than the other does, so when these two images are synthesized by our brains together into one 3-D image, it fools us into thinking that it's three dimensions - like those cool holograms you see in sci-fi movies!
