What Is Robotic Process Automation (RPA)?
Robots are taking over! No, not the ones that will destroy us all in a fiery apocalypse. The kind that does your taxes and files your paperwork. Robots have been around for a while now—remember HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Recently, robotic process automation (RPA) has taken off to automate business processes using software agents (bots) to perform routine clerical tasks without human assistance. RPA helps automate business processes that are rules-based and repetitive. Robotic process automation (RPA) is a technology that uses software agents (bots) to carry out routine clerical tasks without human assistance. RPA helps automate business processes that are rules-based and repetitive. These tasks can be anything from data entry to customer service, which means that RPA can be used in nearly every industry. The best part about RPA is that it doesn't require employee training because it operates based on predetermined rules by IT professionals and managers. RPA has been around since the early 2000s, but it's only recently gained popularity in the United States because of its affordability and effectiveness. Once you have RPA bots up and running, you're ready to get to work. You might be tempted to think of them as robots from outer space, but they're closer to humans than you think. They can follow a workflow that encompasses multiple steps across multiple applications. Unlike traditional automation projects that require extensive developer help, RPA projects use an organization's existing applications. They're not perfect, though—they do have the occasional hiccup. For example, if a typo in a form field name or a number is entered incorrectly in an API call, it could cause the bot to fail miserably at its task. Don't worry, you can always give your bots some training, and they'll learn from their mistakes!
