What Is Remote Diagnostics?
If you're not sure what remote diagnostics is, don't worry. We're not sure either. It's a term that has been used to refer to methods of analysis and observation that occur remotely. It's used in the auto industry, but it's also used in IT and in several sectors where diagnostics are necessary. The remote part is easy to understand. It refers to the diagnostic activity occurring at some distance from the subject being diagnosed (the car, computer, etc.). The diagnostic activity itself may be performed by any number of people or devices operating remotely from one another or even from just one person who uses multiple devices remotely. The term "diagnosis" describes what someone does when they want to know what's going on with something. For example, if someone feels ill and goes to see his doctor, he will expect his doctor to come up with a diagnosis for what's wrong with him based on his symptoms and other information about his health history (if any). With remote diagnostics, you can diagnose things that aren't in the same room as you. It is useful when dealing with physical systems—like manufacturing plants or even people's bodies. You might need to be able to diagnose what's happening on your assembly line without being there, or perhaps you want to know whether your patient's temperature is expected without being in the room with them. It can also be helpful in IT, where it's common for people to work remotely from one another. There are times when this is necessary—for example if an employee is traveling on business or needs to take care of a family emergency—but it's also common for companies to have employees who telecommute because it reduces costs and helps them stay competitive in their industry.
