What Is Pwn?
If you are in the mood to Pwn, you're looking for a way to defeat someone or something stunningly and surprisingly. It can be done in many ways, from the virtual world of gaming to the real world. For example: "I'm going to pwn my brother at Mario Kart today" or "I just got pwned by my mom when she made me clean up my room" or "As soon as I get home from work, I'm going to pwn the giant stack of dishes in my sink." The word pwn is derived from the verb own, which means "to gain ownership of," "to defeat," or "to subdue". Pwn is considered a misspelling of its own. This misspelling has become so widespread and accepted that it had become its word. When you see the word pwned, it means that someone has been defeated or subdued. Pwn, pwned, and pwnage are all words that point to beating someone or something. Initially used in the context of computer gaming, particularly massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), pwn has since been adopted by other contexts as well. It's now commonly used to refer to anything from a job interview to a game of Mario Kart. Do you know what else is next to the "o" key? The letter "u." That's right, folks! You can own someone so hard that it looks like you're typing in a different language. Linguists speculate that "pwn" was initially derived from the word "own," where to "own" someone means to ensure their complete and total defeat. It is believed that because the "o" and "p" keys are next to each other on a standard English keyboard, "pwn" was such a common typo for "own" that it eventually took on the original word's meaning.
