What Is Provisioning (Computer Networking)?
Provisioning is like a guard dog it's there daily, protecting your enterprise from outside threats. And inside threats too! Provisioning ensures that no one gets access to resources they shouldn't have—and if they do get access and use those resources in ways they shouldn't, it keeps them from getting too far into trouble before you can step in and stop them! Provisioning ensures that your enterprise has the proper access rights to all the different types of resources it needs. It's the process of configuring, deploying and managing IT system resources. When you provision a resource, you ensure it's secured and ready to go for whatever use case applies. You can do this by configuring permissions and managing user access rights. Provisioning also includes monitoring user privacy because sometimes people don't realize how much information they're giving up when they agree to terms of service or other agreements. Provisioning is the fourth step in the Operations, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning (OAMP) management framework. It's not just about getting servers up and running—provisioning is about ensuring that the servers are configured to support the application. Provisioning is also about ensuring that each server has access to its resources: disk space, memory, CPU time, network bandwidth and so on. In the context of computer networking, provisioning refers to the process of configuring a network device with the correct settings for its intended use. Provisioning is typically performed by network administrators or systems engineers but can also be done by end users familiar with configuring their own devices. Provisioning is often performed on routers, switches, firewalls and load balancers. It may also be used to set up user accounts on servers or desktops and configure printers or other peripheral devices connected to computers in a networked environment.
