What Is Privoxy?
If you're tired of all the crap on the Internet, you should try Privoxy. It's an open-source, non-caching Web proxy that can run on nearly any major Web browser. The program can modify Web pages and HTTP headers as intermediaries between the browser display and the Web source. Privoxy helps help Web users tailor their results when loading various pages. For example, it can filter out spam or advertisements from sites like Facebook or Amazon. It can also block cookies from sending to third parties like Google Analytics or Twitter. Privoxy is a free and open-source Web proxy server. It allows you to control what content is available on the Web and helps protect your privacy online. Privoxy can filter web pages based on many characteristics, including specific URLs, keywords or strings in their content, HTTP headers, cookies and more. These filters are called rules, and each rule consists of a pattern to match against the data (URLs, titles etc.) and an action that should be taken if the print matches. Rules are applied in order until no more matches are found, or all have been handled. The first use case for Privoxy is security: You can block access to certain sites or ensure that only specific sites are accessible from your computer. It can also be used for privacy: You can automatically block ads or other unwanted content displayed by some websites when you visit them so that you don't have to see them anymore! The last thing you want to see is a pop-up ad when trying to get work done. That's precisely what happens when you're surfing the Web: pop-ups, banners, and even entire pages are being used to distract you from your work. If you've ever felt like the Internet was just one big distraction machine designed to keep you from getting anything done, we're here to tell you that one tool can help: Privoxy! Privoxy is an open-source web proxy server for filtering web traffic and modifying requests. It's used for blocking advertisements and other distractions so users can focus on their work. The software has many other features, including SSL/TLS encryption and compression support.
