What Is Open Wireless Movement (OWM)?

The Open Wireless Movement is all about making the Internet a safer place. The OWM is an organization that aims to make the wireless Internet shared, open and accessible to all without compromising the security of Internet service providers (ISP) or individuals. It was initiated by organizations, technology professionals and Internet freedom activists. They believe that everyone should have equal access to the Internet regardless of their income or location. They also think that any person should be able to connect to any website they want without having to worry about being monitored by third parties or having their private information stolen by hackers. The OWM's mission is to promote open-source software, encryption technologies such as SSL/TLS, VPNs and anonymity networks like Tor so that users can enjoy privacy when surfing online. Everyone should have equal access to information, and that means everyone should have equal access to the Internet. The Open Wireless Movement started in 2007 when the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) decided it was time for all people in America to have free and open access to the Internet on their phones or other devices. They wanted everyone, not just those who could afford it, to be able to use Wi-Fi at home, at work, or anywhere else they found themselves without a connection. It didn't take long for others around the world to catch on and realize what a fantastic idea this was: soon after EFF began its campaign, organizations like the Open Rights Group (ORG), NYC Wireless and The Open Technology Institute (OTI) joined forces with them in their mission. These groups all share a common goal: providing open access for everyone wherever they go!
