What Is Mobile Code?
Once upon a time, there was a "mobile code." It was a tiny little thing that moved around and could infect your computer. Could embed it in an email, document or website. It uses network or storage media, such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drive, to execute local code from another computer system. The big problem with mobile code is that it creates varying degrees of computer and system damage. It's usually downloaded via the body of an HTML email or email attachment. It can also deliver mobile code through a malicious link or code embedded within a website. Mobile code can be installed in various ways but is often installed without the user's knowledge. To avoid mobile code, educating yourself about common indicators of mobile code is helpful. These indicators can include an unknown email address, an unexpected file type in an email, or a URL link to an unknown website. Mobile code can be divided into two broad categories: ActiveX and Java. ActiveX is a Microsoft technology that allows the software to run on different computers and operating systems; Java is a programming language that enables applications to run on multiple platforms without needing to be recompiled for each operating system. If you're not careful, you could be infected by mobile code. What is mobile code? It's like a virus but infects the hard drive instead of infecting your computer files. It's like a virus that never stops replicating itself. It keeps spreading until no more spaces are left on the hard drive. How does this happen? Well, it all starts with a seemingly harmless website with some plug-ins for download (like ActiveX or Flash). If you visit that site and download what seems like content, like a song, and then execute it, your computer will be infected with mobile code and will begin to replicate itself repeatedly.
