What Is Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)?
The best way to think of a MAN is to imagine a LAN that's really into working out. When building a MAN, you need to start with a LAN with some solemn muscle mass and a lot of endurance. Then you have to connect it with other LANs so they can work together—like how your body works when you're lifting weights or running long distances. Once you've got your MAN in place, there are tons of things you can do with it share files, stream videos and music from other computers on the network, and use the Internet at higher speeds than what's available at home (if your ISP has been throttling your connection), play multiplayer games with people who live far away from where you live anything your heart desires!MANs are like LANs but with more elbow room. Have you been on a plane and seen a seat meant for your neighbor, but there was no neighbor? That's a MAN. They're pretty much just LANs, only bigger. A MAN is formed by connecting multiple LANs. It can be the size of a city, campus, or some other municipal or organizational territory. However, it's still smaller than a WAN that covers dispersed geographical areas, sometimes directly connecting users worldwide. In the future, we believe that MANs will be a viable alternative to commercial ISPs in many U.S. communities. The pushback against this model by incumbent ISPs has been strong, but we think it will fade as the demand for better connectivity increases. One central factor in this is the profit motive. Incumbent ISPs are vested in maintaining the status quo because they make more money. It's not in their best interests to support municipal or civic networking options if they can help.
