What Is Memory Resistor (Memristor)?
A memristor is a passive, two-terminal electrical device whose resistance changes depending on past, current flow. Since it can "remember" the charge quantity that has already traveled through it, it is referred to as a "memory resistor." This feature is the primary reason for its name. Now, you could ask yourself, "Why do we require something such as this in the first place? "Aren't all resistors resistive?" Well, conventional resistors have what's known as a "set resistance value," which means that they consistently provide the same level of opposition to the current flow. On the other hand, memristors have a changeable resistance that can be altered in response to applying a variety of voltages. Due to their unique quality, memristors are an extremely appealing candidate for use in various electronic applications, including neuromorphic computing and machine learning. In these sectors, memristors can replicate the activity of neurons and synapses in the human brain, enabling more energy-efficient and powerful computer systems. Yet how do memristors perform their functions? Ions moving around inside the apparatus are the key to understanding this phenomenon. When current is applied to a memristor, its ions migrate, changing its resistance. This shift in resistance lets the memristor "remember" how much charge has flowed through it. Memristors retain their resistance even after the power is off. They could be used as non-volatile memory, like flash memory or RAM. A memristor is a fantastic little device that has the ability to change its resistance based on the current flowing through it and maintain that resistance state even when the power is turned off. To summarise, a memristor has the ability to change its resistance based on the current flowing through it. It has various possible applications in multiple domains, such as neuromorphic computing and machine learning. It can completely transform the way we think about electronics and computers.
