What Is Mashup?

TechDogs Avatar

Mashups are the new black. They're all the rage, and you can't escape them. You've seen them on TV, heard about them in the news, and read about them in magazines. They're everywhere. They're coming to a website near you. A mashup is a technique by which a website or Web application uses data, presentation or functionality from two or more sources to create a new service. Mashups are made possible via Web services or public APIs that (generally) allow unrestricted access. Most mashups are visual and interactive. So what does this mean for you? It means that if your website still needs to be a mashup, it will be soon and if it already is one, congratulations! You're ahead of the curve on this one.; the easiest way to create a mashup is by using an application with a mashup builder. Most of these applications can create a mashup with one click. For example, you can create a mashup with one click using the Embedly API, a popular website option. Install the Embedly button on your website, and then you can choose from various APIs to add to your website. With a few lines of code, you can create a mashup that displays content from your website on another website. Mashup is a term often used in the same context as cloud computing and Web 2.0. They're all related in some way: as more and more functionality is provided via the browser, Web applications are becoming a better description of what we're doing online than websites. So, mashup, what does it mean? It's hard to say because it's such a buzzword that most people need clarification on what they mean when they use it anymore! In general terms, mashup usually refers to combining two things into one new thing (like peanut butter and jelly).
