What Is Internet Key Exchange (IKE)?
Your computer is a vast place. It has all sorts of things inside it and constantly communicates with other computers on the Internet. Sometimes, when using a public Wi-Fi hotspot or working from home without a firewall, your computer isn't safe from hackers and criminals who want to steal your data. That's where Internet Key Exchange (IKE) comes in! IKE is an essential management protocol standard used with the Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) standard, which provides security for virtual private networks (VPNs) negotiations and network access to random hosts.IKE can be described as exchanging keys for encryption and authentication over an unsecured medium, such as the Internet. IKE was designed for use with IPsec, and it is highly recommended to use IPsec with IKE for best results. It is possible to use IPsec without IKE, but it's not recommended and won't receive future patches. IKE is the standard protocol for IPsec, so it's essential to understand how it works. IKE can exchange keys for any IPsec implementation, whether native to your operating system or a 3rd party VPN. There are two types of implementation for IKE: server-based and client-based. Server-based performances are usually easier to set up, but they require a constant connection to the server. Client-based implementations require more effort but don't need continuous contact. IKE is a great way to get your security on. It eliminates the need for manual specification of all the IPSec security parameters at both peers. It allows you to specify a particular lifetime for the IPsec security association, which we can all agree is a big plus. Furthermore, can change encryption during IPsec sessions—a feature I'm sure will make many of you very happy. Additionally, it permits certification authority and dynamic authentication of peers. Last but certainly not least, it makes it, so there are no more arguments about who gets to watch what on Netflix. The bottom line is that IKE makes life better by making it more manageable!
