What Is Internet Exchange Point (IXP)?
Have you ever wondered why the internet is so fast and reliable, even when your WiFi is terrible? Well, the answer lies in an underground bunker in downtown Chicago. That's right: it's no coincidence that your Netflix stream never buffers. The reason for this is because of a place called an Internet Exchange Point (IXP). An IXP is a physical access point through which major network providers connect their networks and exchange traffic. The primary focus of an exchange point is to facilitate network interconnection by eliminating third-party networks. IXPs are commonly used to interconnect networks with varied geographical locations. For example, an internet exchange point in North America can be used in North America to interconnect networks in North America with networks in Europe. Similarly, a European exchange point can connect European networks with networks in South America. An Internet exchange point (IXP) is a physical location where ISPs can exchange network traffic. They're often established in the same city to avoid latency. IXPs are necessary because ISPs have multiple upstream providers, and without an exchange point, all of the data from one ISP would have to flow through each of its upstream providers before reaching any other ISP. It creates an unnecessary load on both sides, which is why IXPs were created. An IXP is like a party in your neighborhood, where all the neighbors—ISPs—get together and exchange traffic. You've got one or more high-speed network Ethernet switches connected, and you're all on the same peering agreement. You also use Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to manage traffic exchange. It's the same with an IXP: if one provider has a direct link failure, everyone can route through another provider's addresses to get what they want: an evening full of good conversation, great food, and wine!
