What Is Hardware Management Console (HMC)?
The Hardware Management Console (HMC) is fantastic because it's like a little computer with a tiny monitor and keyboard, but it's connected to your main computer and can tell you all kinds of things about your server. It can tell you how many fans are running or if there are any problems with the processor. It also lets you manage your system resources—so if you have five processors in one machine but only need two, you can turn off three and still use the other two! That way, you're saving money on electricity costs. The human mind is capable of many things. It can solve complex math problems, create beautiful art, and even create a new way to manage software configuration and operation of partitions on a server system. This is all thanks to the humble HMC or human mind computer interface. HMCs are used by system administrators to inexpensively manage software configuration and operation of partitions in a complex and expensive server system. Additionally, the administrator can monitor the system for hardware issues and errors and manage other aspects of the server's configuration. HMCs are usually simple devices that connect with an internal processor on a server via USB. The HMC allows an administrator to interact with their computer through thought alone! The HMC is the brains behind the operation, and it's what makes the whole thing possible. The HMC performs DLPAR functions, allowing hard drive logical partitions to be configured without shutting down the operating system (OS). It also activates and manages capacity-on-demand resources, which provide processing power, system memory or other system storage space when needed. The HMC is an incredible piece of technology made by IBM for configuring and operating partitioned systems like servers. It's not just for IBM products—it works with other brands too!
