What Is Groupware?

Groupware is the software that keeps your team together. Groupware can differ between a successful project and one that falls apart if you work with a distributed team. Groupware allows people to work on projects from anywhere with an internet connection without missing out on face-to-face communication or collaboration. It also lets you store files in one place—the cloud—so you don't have to worry about losing or having them scattered across different computers. When you need access to something, it's there for you. Regarding groupware, you can't say it results from a single invention. In the early 1990s, international giants such as IBM and Boeing began using electronic meeting systems for their internal projects to introduce the first commercial groupware products. Lotus Notes appeared as a significant product of this category, further enhancing remote group collaborations. If you've ever wished you could get your friends together in the same room, synchronous groupware is the answer. Synchronous groupware is an application that allows people to communicate via shared computational objects in real time, regardless of their geographical location. Synchronous groupware has been around for ages, but recently, it has become accessible to a broader range of people. For synchronous groupware to function, clients must be able to synchronize their activities. The user interfaces to create the sensation of unity by providing shared audio channels for communication.
