What Is Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)?

GIF is an acronym that stands for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). CompuServe first used the term in 1987. The GIF format provided a platform-independent, portable means of storing and exchanging bitmap images. GIF supports up to 8 bits per pixel and thus has access to a palette of up to 256 colors. The GIF specification does not support actual color (24-bit) images, but most web browsers can display such images by dithering them down to the nearest color in their palettes. GIFs can contain both animated and static images. Static GIFs store multiple images in one file, with each image being separated by a short distance in X and Y space (see interlacing). Animated GIFs store numerous frames that are displayed in succession using interlaced scanning. The structures can be of different durations, and they can be displayed at various speeds or sequentially. Having a GIF in your back pocket is always a good idea.
