What Is GNUnet?
Have you ever wanted to create a decentralized, peer-to-peer network without any centralized activities or paying for it? Well, GNUnet is the software framework for you! GNUnet (short for GNU Network) is a free software framework that allows you to do just that. It's part of the GNU project and is therefore released under the GNU General Public License—which means you can use and modify it as much as you want. This framework is mainly coded in C language, but there's also a version in Java. GNUnet provides network services like link encryption, peer discovery and allocation of resources. It's compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux environments, and Solaris. GNUnet is a free, decentralized, and secure network that lets you share data with anyone, anywhere. It's a new way to do things online. GNUnet's primary focus is on security: all messages traveling from one peer to another are confidential, and no one else can access these messages without authentication. It is possible because GNUnet can encapsulate network traffic in TCP, UDP, SMTP and HTTP messages and facilitates data sharing. GNUnet uses uniform-resource identification (URI) for naming resources, allowing users to recognize each other's resources by a URI name; they can use this URI name to access the resource later. GNUnet is like the Internet, but you can eat it. It's a decentralized network that allows people to exchange information freely. It's also unrestrained, meaning anyone can use and improve it. Since it's decentralized, no one entity controls GNUnet—it's run by everyone who uses it. The main goal of GNUnet is to become a widely used, open, reliable, egalitarian, non-discriminating, unfettered and censorship-resistant system for exchanging free information. GNUnet envisions being more than a file-sharing network; it wants to serve as a development platform for the next generation of decentralized Internet protocols.
