What Is Enterprise Knowledge Management (EKM)?
A Enterprise Knowledge Management (EKM) is a centralized repository used to organize, store and share organizational knowledge with employees and customers. It's like an encyclopedia for your organization. But instead of storing facts about the world, it stores facts about your organization: how it works, what its mission is, who its leaders are and how they got there—the things that make it unique. A KMS can be used to share information inside the company or with customers, but it's most effective when used both ways. The best KMSs integrate internal and external knowledge to help employees work more effectively and provide customers with relevant information on demand. Knowledge management is about ensuring your employees have access to the information they need when they need it. This can be tricky: how often have you heard someone say, "oh no, I know who can help you with that! " only to find out that the person has left the company? Or maybe they're busy with something else and can't explain what's happening. With a knowledge management system, you can ensure everyone has access to the right people at any time—even if those people move around or change jobs. And in customer service? Knowledge management means making sure your customers get timely answers when they look for them on your FAQ pages or chatbots. Knowledge management systems are like the Wikipedia of your company's knowledge. They're a place where employees can go to find the information they need, and they're a place where employees can add their expertise so that others can find it later. If you've looked up how to do something on Wikipedia, you know how useful it is: you don't have to consume hours researching the answer yourself—you get right down to business and when someone needs the same information, later on, they can head over there and find it in a matter of seconds. That's what a knowledge management system does for your company's employees: it ensures everyone has easy access to the information they need to get their work done quickly and efficiently. It also allows them to add their knowledge about how things work around here so that other people will know where to look when they need help with something new or unusual!
