What Is eDonkey Network (eD2k)?

eDonkey Network (eD2k) is the OG of decentralized peer-to-peer file sharing. It's the OG because it was the first to create a decentralized network that allowed users to share files instantly with each other instead of going through a central server. eDonkey uses a protocol called Kademlia, a distributed hash table (DHT). A DHT is a type of network that allows participants in a system to communicate with each other by passing messages through intermediate nodes. Kademlia assigns every node in the network an ID number that identifies it uniquely and allows it to be found by others. Each node maintains its own data set, or "bucket," which contains information about the files. When someone wants to see another user's bucket, they send requests for nearby nodes where those files might be stored until one responds positively. It's no secret that many network data and file-sharing suites exist. But eD2k is one of the most extensive decentralized P2P networking systems and provides server and client applications. The server applications have two families developed in C++ and C programming languages, while the client applications are available in various languages. The authentic client applications - eMule and eDonkey 2000 - were acquired in Visual Basic and C++. When sending a file, you must ensure you can get it there. If something happens in the middle of your transmission, you want to be able to pick up where you left off. What if your message breaks off into chunks? What if only one of those chunks gets through? What if the rest of the chips never make it at all? The answer is simple: break your files into smaller pieces before sending them out! If a chunk fails to arrive at its destination, then no harm is done—send that chunk again! Since at this point you will have sent more than one chunk, chances are excellent that at least one will still be waiting when the other arrives.
