What Is Duplication Bug (Dupe Bug)?
Don't let the bugs get you down. If you're playing a game, and your character keeps getting stuck in a tree, falling off a cliff, or generally acting weird, don't worry—you're not alone! That happens when there's a Duplication Bug (Dupe Bug). A dupe bug (or "duplication bug") is a video game bug that replicates a valuable gaming element or gaming currency. When a dupe bug becomes known, gamers may exploit the bug to move ahead in the game. This type of exploitation occurs most frequently in ongoing multiplayer gaming. Dupe bugs can undermine overall gaming processes. As such, game manufacturers may take action against those found to be exploiting dupe bugs. Some games have a report feature that allows other players to report those they believe are using dupe bugs. Upon review, the game manufacturer can determine if action is warranted. On the severity of the exploit, the consequences can range from a temporary or permanent ban to a reduction in in-game currency. The term "dupe bug" refers to a glitch in a game that allows players to duplicate virtual items or money. Duping is often the result of a programming error, but it can also be caused by intentionally modifying game files. In the past, dupes were frequent and sometimes even encouraged by game developers who wanted to increase their profits. Many games have included an anti-dupe system that prevents more than one item from being produced, but this only works if the player has yet to discover how to bypass it. Modern gaming products include intrusion detection systems, making exploiting dupe bugs less common as time has passed. However, some of the effects of previous dupes are still being experienced. For example, numerous dupe bugs in currency duping can cause the virtual economy to experience inflation. It causes the cost of player-to-player transactions to increase along with the amount of virtual money in the system. In the case of item duping, the thing that has been duplicated may quickly lose its value when the price falls due to increased supply.
