What Is Dopant?
Do you know what it is about silicon that makes it so unique? Dopants! Dopants are a fascinating topic, so let's get into them. Dopants are atoms, or molecules added to a semiconductor material, like silicon, germanium, or gallium arsenide, to change its properties. Dopants let us completely control how well a material conducts electricity, which is an essential property for making electronic devices. There are two categories of dopants: n-type and p-type. N-type dopants are more common. Adding N-type dopants like phosphorus or arsenic, which can add more electrons to the material, can make a semiconductor material better at conducting electricity. P-type dopants, such as boron and aluminum, create "holes" in places with no electrons. It, too, contributes to an increase in electrical conductivity, but in a different manner. P-n junctions are the basic building blocks of many electronic devices, like diodes, transistors, and solar cells. To make a p-n junction, you must mix n-type dopants with p-type dopants. Doping is the process of introducing dopants to a semiconductor material, and it can be accomplished using various methods, including diffusion, ion implantation, or epitaxy. Doping is also known as doping a semiconductor. Parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppb) are the standard units of measurement for the doping concentration, also known as the number of dopants that were introduced to the material (ppb). Dopants are incredibly important to the semiconductor industry and have been responsible for creating a great deal of the modern technology we use daily. Without dopants, we would not have transistors that power our computers or solar cells that create renewable energy. In addition, we would not have renewable energy. However, use extreme caution because dopants are notoriously tricky to work with. To avoid causing faults that might compromise the functionality of the semiconductor device, they need to be incorporated into the material in the appropriate quantities and at the correct locations. Keep this in mind the next time you use your smartphone, computer, or any other electronic device: dopants make it all possible.
