What Is Digital Versatile Disk Rewritable (DVD-R)?
You're at the store, and you see a Digital Versatile Disk Rewritable (DVD-R). You know what that means—you can finally store all your favorite movies on one disc! But wait, there's more! You can create your film with a DVD-R and save it to the disc. If you want to ensure that no one else can get at it, lock it down with a password and if you're worried about losing your data don't worry. All your files are stored in a format that makes them impossible to alter or erase. So, next time you're at the store thinking about buying a movie, think again with so much storage space available and so many options for customization and security, why would you even consider buying anything else? The DVD-R(g) is the most popular format. Pioneer and Sony developed the design. If a DVD-R disc has not been finalized, it can be erased and re-recorded. If a DVD-R disc has been completed, it cannot be rewritten. An un-finalized DVD-R disc must be finished before you can play it on most DVD players. Most DVD-R discs are single-layer discs that can hold 4.7 GB of data. Some dual-layer DVD-R discs hold up to twice the amount of data as the single-layer discs. DVD-R discs are compatible with most DVD players and laptop computers. The data on a DVD-R can be "written to" only once and cannot be changed, however, if the total amount of data written is not more than the disc capacity. Adding additional data can add other data in what is known as multi-session, a recordable format allowing recording in sessions if there is free space left on the disc. You may choose to erase all the data on your disc at once. If you do this, you must reformat it before adding new information.
