What Is Data Organization?
Remember when you were a kid, and your mom put all the Christmas presents in a box and wrapped it up? Then she labeled the box with tape that said "TOYS" and put it in the closet. That's data organization. Data organization is how you label and organize your data so it can be found easily. This means that if you want to find the toy from your mom, you don't have to go rummaging through every single box in the closet. You go to the closet, pull out the TOYS box, and open it up! When people talk about data organization, they usually mean physical records, like paper documents or even CDs (if we're still using those). Yet digital records also need organizing, like emails on your phone or PDFs on your computer. Data organization is like a Rubik's cube. It's hard to get it just right, but when you do, it looks great! There are many ways that IT professionals work on the principle of data organization. Many of these are classified under the more general "data management." For example, re-ordering or analyzing the arrangement of data items in a physical record is part of data organization. Organizing your data to be used effectively is essential to any successful project. It can mean the difference between getting an A+ and getting an F- on your report card (in terms of grades). When it comes to data organization, there are two types: structured and unstructured. Structured data has been organized according to a defined set of rules or standards; unstructured data doesn't have such rules or standards. Unstructured data is sort of like that guy at the bar who's really fun to talk to but who has no idea what he's doing or where he's going with his life… which makes sense because he's drunk all the time. Structured data is more like that guy who seems too good to be true but turns out to be real, even better than expected!
