What Is Data Charging?
The internet is a beautiful thing, but it can also be costly. Data charging is the amount charged to a mobile phone account for data access, which usually refers to Internet-based data. Data charges are typically based on how much data you use per month. Some providers charge more for certain types of content, such as streaming video or music. However, many phone plans offer unlimited data plans, which means you can use as much data as you want without paying extra charges. If you need to figure out how much data you need each month, try to stay within 1GB per month. Consider upgrading your plan or switching carriers if this seems too much or too little information. Data charging is like the weather: It's all about cloud cover. With the pay-as-you-use data charging scheme, subscribers are charged based on the total amount of hours used or the total amount of data downloaded. The latter is based on the Web page size, in kilobytes or megabytes. Thus, pages with only text are less expensive than pages with images. Some people have criticized the scheme as being "unfair" because it doesn't charge users for how much time they spend on a website but rather for what they use from that website. However, according to researchers at Cambridge University, most users don't spend much time perusing sites before moving on to another, so they should pay only for what they use. Pay-as-you-use is the cheaper data charging scheme for users only occasionally going online. However, this option may be more expensive for users who frequently updawho ting Facebook, send tweets, browse the Web, watch YouTube, and so on. The reason is that pay-per-use is charged at a flat rate of 10p per MB of data. If you use 1MB of mobile data and pay 10p, you will use up 1% of your monthly allowance. Using 4MB of mobile data and paying 40p will constitute 4% of your monthly allocation. The quicker you go through your monthly allowance, the more expensive it becomes!
