What Is Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD)?
The Internet has changed the world in ways we never could've imagined. But before the Internet, there was CDPD. For those who weren't around back then, CDPD was a service that allowed you to access the Internet and other packet-switched systems over a cellular network. It was used by analog advanced mobile phone system (AMPS) standards, one of the first-generation cellular frequencies. CDPD was revolutionary in its time—it allowed people to access information anywhere they had cell phone service. It was limited because it only worked on AMPS networks and could not be used outside North America. In the mid-nineties, CDPD was introduced as a way to access the web on your phone when everyone was interested in using the Internet from their mobile phones. It allowed people to connect to servers via short message service (SMS), general packet radio services (GPRS) and 3-G technologies. Unfortunately, due to its limited bandwidth, it became obsolete by 2001 when it was replaced by SMS and GPRS. These protocols were much faster and more efficient than Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD), allowing users to access the Internet without waiting to load on their phone screens. The mobile revolution is a hot topic these days. While we all love to talk about the latest phones and networks, it's easy to forget that there was a time when mobile phones were not so common—and you could only talk on them if you were in the car. The first cellular mobile phone network was called AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone Service). It only worked in cars and required a special adapter for your car's cigarette lighter. You also had to be within range of a cell tower, which wasn't always possible if driving around rural areas or places with low population density. CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) changed everything by allowing data transfer between phones via cell towers instead of voice calls. It also allowed users to access the Internet from their phones. That's why they celebrate CDPD today!
