Cartesian coordinates are the foundation of all coordinate systems, which means they're the basis for pretty much everything you see in your life. Cartesian coordinates are named after Rene Descartes, a mathematician and philosopher who developed the system in the 17th century. The basic idea behind Cartesian coordinates is that two numbers can describe any point on a two-dimensional or three-dimensional plane—one number that tells how far left or right it is from some point (the x coordinate) and another number that describes how far up or down it is from some point (the y coordinate). In computing, these coordinates are widely used for graphics programming. Physicists also use them to describe spatial relationships with quantum mechanics. Cartesian coordinates are a system that allows us to describe the position of a point in space. The plan was invented by philosopher, mathematician and scientist Rene Descartes in 1637. The Cartesian coordinate system specifies attributes on two axes or three axes in the case of 3-D graphs. The position of an issue is determined by its distance from the origin or the point where all the axes converge. A line connects two points in a plane to define a line in two dimensions. A line connects three points in a plane to determine a line in three dimensions. The z-axis represents the vertical plane in three dimensions, and the y-axis defines the forward and backward motion. Cartesian coordinates are named after a French mathematician named Rene Descartes, who developed the Cartesian coordinates system in the 17th century.
