What Is Card Skimming?
When stealing someone's identity, you can't just go around and swipe their card like you're in a bank. That would be way too obvious. You have to be a little brighter. With card skimming, you don't have to touch the person's card at all, which makes it much easier to do without them noticing—as they did in that one episode of "Black Mirror," where everyone was living on a social media platform. They could never leave their phones alone. It is a device that illegally copies information from credit and debit cards' magnetic strips. Employees working in retail stores may skim cards by having customers swipe their cards twice or take them to a different area in the store. A perpetrator may also install a card skimmer on an ATM. A card skimmer steals financial information, resulting in unauthorized access to money. Card skimmers are getting sneakier. Card skimming has become more sophisticated and more complex for cardholders to detect. Card skimmers now use tiny pinhole cameras to capture ATM users' PINs, which can be sent to a remote receiver and card data. In addition, some card skimmers have been outfitted with Bluetooth technology that allows them to wirelessly transmit stolen information from your ATM session directly to a nearby smartphone or computer. It's time to stop the crime of card stripping once and for all. The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards Council has been working hard to find new ways to prevent credit card theft and identity fraud and educate consumers about protecting themselves from this electronic crime. The PCI council has implemented many recent proposals to help businesses protect their customers' payment information, including chip-based mobile payments instead of magnetic strips, which are easier for criminals to counterfeit or steal. While these new measures may seem overkill, they're necessary to keep up with the changing world of payment processing. There is no doubt that criminals are always looking for new ways around security measures—so we need to innovate to stay ahead of them constantly!
