What Is Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR)?
Do you have a business? Do you have a computer? Then congratulations! You already have the business continuity and disaster recovery. That's right; it's as simple as that: if you have a business and a computer, you're covered. Why? Because every day, when you get up in the morning, you're doing what we call "business continuity and disaster recovery. " If anyone should ask if your company has BCDR, tell them no—because it doesn't matter. It's just not something that matters. If anything goes wrong, call 9-1-1, and they'll help out or maybe they won't respond because they're too busy dealing with other disasters like terrorism, crime, global warming, or whatever else is happening on planet Earth. Business continuity planning is essential for every organization, large or small. It doesn't matter if your company operates in a single location or across multiple countries. The impact of a major disaster on your company would be significant. Moreover, business continuity isn't something that only large enterprises have to worry about. Every organization needs to have a plan in case of a major disaster. Even if your organization operates in a single location and you don't need to worry about crossing international boundaries, it's still essential to have a plan in place. For DR, enterprises typically plan to keep critical applications and data available if there is a disaster, such as a fire at the primary data center. For BC, enterprises usually plan to support critical applications and data available even if there is a disaster at the primary data center. Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) is the process of planning and preparing for an organization to continue operating in the event of significant disruption. It's a broad term that combines the roles and functions of IT and business, and it's what keeps your company running when everything else comes crashing down around you.
