What Is Autonomous System Number (ASN)?

An Autonomous System Number, sometimes known as a #ASN for its abbreviated form, is comparable to a unique internet address card. In the same way that you have a street address to let people know where you live, an Autonomous System Number (AS Number) notifies other routers on the internet of the location of a specific group of networks and routers. This group is referred to as an autonomous system. IANA, or the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, is a global organization responsible for assigning AS numbers. These ASNs are one-of-a-kind for each AS. Therefore, just as it is impossible for two houses to share the same street address, it is also impossible for two ASes to share the same ASN. They enable routers to determine the most efficient path for internet traffic. ASNs are an essential component of the system that governs the routing of data over the internet. It is analogous to mailing a letter when information is transferred from one location to another using the internet. For the packet to arrive at its destination, it requires an address, and the ASN serves as that address. To communicate with one another and share information on ASNs, routers use a protocol known as the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). This is analogous to the way the postman delivers mail to various residences. To determine where to deliver the letter (or information packet), the postman (or BGP router) looks at the address (or ASN) that is printed on the envelope. An Autonomous System Number, or ASN, is similar to a particular Internet address card. It is unique to each Autonomous System and is assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). An ASN is an essential component of the internet routing system.
