Humanoid Robot Sales Hit Just 7,000 Globally In 2025 Despite Boom Forecasts

For all the viral demos, billion-dollar investment interest, running robots and boxing machines, humanoid robots remain a tiny commercial market.

Humanoid Robot Sales Remain Tiny Compared With Industrial And Service Robots

The 7,000-unit figure gives one of the clearest early benchmarks for a sector attracting heavy investment and attention, but it also puts the current scale of humanoid robotics into perspective.

The International Federation of Robotics, or IFR, defines a humanoid as a robot with a human-like appearance that can operate autonomously in an environment designed for humans. Interestingly, legs are not required for a machine to qualify.

Even under that broader definition, humanoids remain “a fraction” of the global robot population, IFR Secretary General Susanne Bieller said. By comparison, around 542,000 conventional industrial robots were installed globally in 2024, while an estimated 199,000 professional service robots were sold for applications such as transport, hospitality and cleaning.

The IFR has tracked global robotics statistics for roughly three decades, but 2025 marks the first time it has collected humanoid figures alongside its much larger industrial and service robot datasets. The organization is expected to publish its 2025 industrial and service robot data on September 24.
 

 

Research And AI Training Drive Humanoid Robot Demand More Than Productive Work

The more revealing detail is where those 7,000 robots are actually going.

Many humanoids sold during 2025 were purchased by research institutions or companies using the machines to generate data that can improve AI models, rather than deploying them as productive workers. That suggests the market is still closer to experimentation and training than widespread commercial automation.

Automakers are among the earliest adopters, but even there, deployments remain limited. Bieller said pilots generally involve “single-digit or sometimes double-digit numbers of robots in their plants.”

That aligns with the IFR’s earlier view that humanoid applications still need to be determined and proven in practice, even as manufacturers prepare for serial production. The organization has also highlighted China as a major center of development, supported by government targets around humanoid mass production.
 

 

Humanoid Robot Shipments Could Rise Sharply Through 2030

The contrast between today’s sales and future forecasts is stark.

Bank of America Global Research estimates that 90,000 humanoid robots could ship in 2026, before reaching 1.2 million units by 2030. If that trajectory materializes, the market would move from experimental deployments to a significantly broader commercial footprint within a few years.

Still, the IFR’s 7,000-unit total comes with important boundaries. It is based on supplier and national industry association data and excludes consumer and military humanoid robots, while medical robots are classified separately.

For now, humanoids may be getting the spotlight, but their actual commercial footprint remains modest. The next test is whether the impressive demonstrations can turn into repeatable, productive deployments at scale.
