GMO Launches Humanoid Ambulance In Japan To Repair And Replace Broken Robots

Japanese technology company GMO AI & Robotics Trading is rolling out a dedicated “Humanoid Ambulance” in Tokyo, designed to bring engineers, diagnostic equipment, replacement parts and even a spare humanoid directly to robots that break down on the job.

Rather than sending every malfunctioning machine back to a repair facility and leaving customers without a working robot, GMO AIR wants to diagnose and repair problems on site or immediately replace the affected humanoid.

GMO Brings The Repair Shop To Humanoid Robots

 

GMO AI & Robotics Trading, also known as GMO AIR, announced the GMO Humanoid Ambulance on September 8, 2026, with deployment scheduled to begin during September, according to GMO AI & Robotics Trading.

The company describes the vehicle as a dedicated maintenance unit designed for situations where humanoid robots experience faults or other problems after being deployed.

It carries diagnostic equipment, major replacement components and repair tools, allowing engineers to inspect and potentially repair the affected robot at its operating location.

However, the more unusual feature is the replacement robot carried inside the vehicle.

If engineers cannot restore the malfunctioning humanoid immediately, the company can swap it for the spare unit and take the damaged robot back to a repair facility.

According to Engadget, the damaged machine can be transported to GMO's Humanoid Lab in Shibuya while its replacement continues working.

This could reduce one of the practical problems businesses face when deploying humanoids for ongoing tasks: downtime.

“Learning from that experience, we came up with the idea of providing replacement humanoids,” GMO AIR CEO Tomohiro Uchida said, as reported by Euronews.

 

The Humanoid Ambulance Is Not For Every Robot

 

Despite its emergency-vehicle styling, the Humanoid Ambulance is essentially a mobile robotics maintenance workshop rather than an emergency ambulance.

There is currently one vehicle based at GMO's Tokyo headquarters, while the model is intended to help businesses get failed robots operating again without waiting for them to return from a conventional repair center, as highlighted by eWeek.

The service also has an important limitation.

GMO says the vehicle is intended for humanoids introduced or deployed by GMO AIR, rather than functioning as a general roadside assistance service for any humanoid robot in Tokyo. Whether the vehicle is dispatched will be decided according to the condition of the robot and GMO's operational capacity.

GMO also calls the vehicle Japan's first dedicated humanoid maintenance vehicle. However, that claim comes from the company itself and is based on its own web research conducted in Japan as of September 2026.

The novelty of the service has also drawn wider coverage, with Interesting Engineering describing the concept as a form of roadside assistance for humanoids.

Why Humanoid Robot Maintenance Could Matter

 

The service points to a less glamorous but increasingly important part of commercial robotics: what happens after a robot is installed.

A humanoid designed to handle recurring workplace responsibilities becomes considerably less useful if a hardware fault takes it out of service for an extended period. GMO's approach combines field diagnostics, repairs, replacement machines and transportation into one response service.

“When humanoids become more popular, this kind of service will be needed,” GMO AIR engineer Shota Takizawa said, according to Euronews.

The September 8 launch event was also documented by Reuters, including images of a humanoid lying inside the maintenance vehicle during GMO AIR's presentation in Tokyo.

GMO says it intends to expand services supporting humanoid robots after deployment, covering their operation, improvement and maintenance rather than ending its involvement after the initial sale or installation.

For businesses considering humanoids for regular workplace tasks, that support infrastructure could eventually become almost as important as what the robots themselves can do.
