Smartphones have become a constant part of everyday life, from messaging and payments to entertainment and work. As people spend more time on their devices, Google is introducing a range of new Android features focused on smarter AI tools, stronger security, better privacy controls and healthier digital habits.

TL;DR

  • Google introduced new 3D emoji and Pause Point to promote healthier phone habits.
  • Android 17 brings scam call detection, theft protection and stronger user controls.
  • The company also unveiled fresh AI, privacy and security upgrades for Android.

Google Brings New 3D Emoji Experience For Pixel Devices

TechDogs - "New 3D Emoji For Pixel Devices"
Google is refreshing the look of its emoji with a new 3D design aimed at making conversations feel more lively and expressive. Google used a playful burrito emoji reference to say the new emoji are “wrapped and ready for delivery.”

“Express yourself with our new 3D emoji. I don’t send status updates to my boss, I send 🌯. In our world, a burrito means our new emoji are wrapped and ready for delivery.”

The company announced its new Noto 3D emoji collection, saying the updated designs are meant to add more depth and personality to digital conversations. Google explained that while emotions carry meaning in real life, they can sometimes feel flat in online interactions. “The way we communicate is constantly evolving and our emoji reflect that,” Google said.

According to the company, the new emoji are designed to bring “a touch of physicality” to online communication and make messages feel more personal. Google said Noto 3D emoji will begin rolling out later this year, starting with Pixel phones before expanding across other Google products and platforms.

Google Introduces Pause Point For Mindful App Use

Many smartphone users open social media or entertainment apps for a quick check, only to lose track of time while scrolling. As concerns around screen time continue to grow, Google is introducing a new feature called Pause Point to encourage more mindful app usage.

The feature adds a 10-second pause before opening distracting apps, giving users a moment to rethink why they opened the app. During the pause, users can do a short breathing exercise, set a timer, view favorite photos or switch to alternative activities like listening to an audiobook. Google said Pause Point is designed to reduce “autopilot app use” and help users spend more time on activities they genuinely enjoy.

Android 17 Expands Security And Privacy Features

Google has announced a wide range of new security and privacy protections for Android 17. Google said it is strengthening banking scam protections with a new verified financial calls feature designed to detect spoofed calls pretending to come from banks or financial institutions. If Android detects that a verified banking app did not place the call, the system can automatically end it.

The company is also expanding Live Threat Detection, which uses on-device AI to identify suspicious app behavior in real time. Android 17 will further tighten protections by limiting accessibility permissions for unsafe apps and adding stronger theft safeguards, including enhanced biometric locking for lost devices.

In addition, Google is introducing improved location privacy controls, stronger AI data protections and Android OS verification tools to help users confirm that devices are running official Android software.

Google Reveals Privacy Focus For Gemini On Android

TechDogs - "Google Privacy For Gemini On Android"
Google is now outlining how it plans to bring Gemini-powered experiences to Android while keeping users in control of their personal data and device activity. Google said Gemini Intelligence on Android is being built around three core principles: “Explicit user control,” “Comprehensive data protection,” and “Operational transparency.”

The company explained that users will be able to choose which Gemini features they want to enable and which apps the assistant can access. Google also said Gemini actions, including app automation and proactive suggestions, will require clear permissions and visibility.

To strengthen privacy protections, Google is using technologies including Private Compute Core and Private AI Compute to safeguard data processed on-device. The company added that Android’s Privacy Dashboard will soon show which AI assistants were active and what apps they accessed within the last 24 hours.
