Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI has launched Kimi K3, a massive open-weight model positioned near the industry frontier, while the use of earlier Kimi technology by major U.S. companies shows Chinese AI models are already crossing into Silicon Valley workflows.

What Is Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3?
Moonshot AI introduced Kimi K3, calling it its most capable model and the world’s first open model in the three-trillion-parameter class.
The company said the model was designed for long-horizon coding, knowledge work and deep reasoning. Its native multimodal architecture also allows it to process text, images and video.
Kimi K3 carries 2.8 trillion total parameters, activates 16 of its 896 experts for each token and supports a one-million-token context window. According to Moonshot, its Kimi Delta Attention and Attention Residuals architecture delivers around 2.5 times better scaling efficiency than Kimi K2.
The BBC reported that Moonshot’s launch represents another indication that Chinese AI developers are narrowing the perceived capability gap with leading U.S. laboratories.
However, Moonshot itself acknowledged that Kimi K3’s overall performance still trails Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol.
The model performed strongly in specific coding evaluations. Reuters reported that Arena ranked Kimi K3 first in a benchmark measuring web interface-building capabilities, while Vals AI placed it second overall behind Fable 5 and ahead of GPT-5.6 Sol.
“This may be the single biggest release of the year,” said Anastasios Angelopoulos, co-founder and CEO of AI benchmarking platform Arena, as quoted by the Associated Press.
News of the launch also affected Moonshot’s domestic rivals. Reuters reported that shares of Zhipu and MiniMax fell around 27.7% and 16.5%, respectively, in Hong Kong trading following the announcement.
Why The Cursor Connection Matters
A Yahoo Finance report noted that Kimi’s influence is no longer limited to China.
Cursor maker Anysphere previously acknowledged that one of its products was developed using Moonshot’s Kimi K2.5 model as a foundation. The connection has gained more significance after SpaceX agreed to acquire Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $60 billion.
This does not mean Cursor operates entirely on Moonshot technology. However, it shows that lower-cost and customizable Chinese models are already contributing to high-value software products developed in the United States.
The Yahoo Finance report also said Thinking Machines Lab, founded by former OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, used Kimi while developing its first product, Inkling. DoorDash and Coinbase have reportedly used Kimi internally, further supporting the argument that Chinese open-weight systems are becoming part of the wider global AI supply chain.
How Much Does Kimi K3 Cost?
Moonshot’s official API pricing lists Kimi K3 at $0.30 per million cache-hit input tokens, $3 per million cache-miss input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
The Associated Press cited Bank of America analysts who estimated that Kimi K3 costs about half as much as OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol.
However, benchmark claims still require caution. Moonshot plans to release Kimi K3’s complete model weights by July 27, 2026, while a detailed technical report covering its architecture, training and evaluations is also expected.

Until independent researchers can fully test those weights, claims that Kimi K3 completely rivals OpenAI or Anthropic should be viewed as promising rather than conclusive.
Even so, the launch shows that the AI race is becoming less about geography and more about performance, pricing, openness and developer adoption. Kimi K3 may not have overtaken the strongest proprietary models yet, but it has made Moonshot AI significantly harder for global competitors to ignore.
