What Is Steve Crocker?
The internet is so vast, complex, and interconnected that it can be hard to keep track of everything, even if you're an expert. One man has had his finger on the pulse of the internet since its inception: Steve Crocker. For those who don't know, Steve Crocker is the inventor of the Request for Comments (RFC) series, authoring history's very first Request for Comments. The RFC series consists of organizational and technical documents about the Internet based on the Internet Research Taskforce, Internet Engineering Task Force, Internet Architecture Board and independent submissions. Although initially developed for recording unofficial notes on ARPANET development, RFC has become an official document for internet communication protocols, events, procedures and specifications. The Internet? Yeah, that's the guy who invented it. Don't worry about him. He doesn't need your pity or praise. He's just as happy being a "regular" guy, going to work daily and making sure people don't accidentally get poisoned by their computers. Crocker is a scientist and researcher at UCLA's School of Medicine, where he works on developing new ways to detect and prevent disease transmission through computers (like how you can get MRSA from an infected mouse). He also has a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California at Los Angeles. To say that John Crocker has a lot on his plate. He's currently the CEO of Shinkuro, a research and development company. This means he's responsible for developing new technology and ensuring the company is financially stable. Before all this, in 1995, Crocker founded the online payment processor Cybercash, Inc. Then, in 1998, he began Executive DSL, a DSL-based ISP. In 1999 he became Chief Executive Officer of Longitude Systems and remained in that position. So how does he do it? We don't know! But we can say one thing: if anyone can do it, John Crocker can!
