What Is Next Hop?
Let's talk about the term "next hop" in the context of a transit network and explain its meaning. Let's pretend for a moment that you're writing and mailing a note. An envelope is prepared by noting the recipient's address, stamping it, and then being deposited in a postbox. So, after that, where does the word go? To whom does it ultimately travel? Data packets (like your message) in a routing network move along a path routers define. The routing table in a router is similar to a network map; it instructs the router where to send data packets based on their destination IP address. Let's assume you're communicating with a remote server over the internet by sending a packet from your computer. Given that it lacks the necessary information to reach the destination immediately, your computer will send the packet to the default gateway, typically your router. The router examines the packet's destination address, consults its routing table, and then chooses where to forward the data. The term "next hop" describes this situation. As the name implies, the next hop is the nearest router in the network to which the packet should be sent. Like a launching pad, it will get you closer to your goal. next hop addresses are stored in each router's routing table to indicate which device the router should forward data packets for a given address. The routers in a network use a routing protocol to determine the next hop location. To determine where to transmit data packets, routers use a protocol. Different routing protocols have distinct advantages and disadvantages. For instance, the Border Gateway Protocol is the Internet's de facto standard routing system (BGP). Since BGP is a path-vector protocol, it considers network rules and path characteristics when making routing decisions. The Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is a straightforward protocol that is simple to set up but is less efficient than some of the other routing protocols; the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol is another option and is widely used in enterprise networks. In summary, the word "next hop" is used in routing networks to describe the next closest router that a packet should be sent to en route to its ultimate destination. Next hop addresses are calculated by the routing protocol and stored in each router's routing database.
