What Is Narrow Artificial Intelligence (Narrow AI)?
Narrow artificial intelligence is like a human—it's good at one thing, but it doesn't have much else going on. That's why we call it narrow AI. Narrow AI is at the opposite end of the AI capability spectrum from artificial general intelligence (AGI). In narrow AI, each machine learning algorithm is designed to perform one task and nothing else. Narrow AI is focused on solving one problem, unlike artificial general intelligence, which is intended to solve many problems. Narrow artificial intelligence can be employed to address specific issues or perform particular jobs, such as driving automobiles, playing chess or going, and identifying pictures and speech. Our lives are becoming more convenient and hassle-free every day. Consider how much time you spend on the phone with customer support or perhaps how much time you spend on the phone attempting to reach someone who can assist you with your issue. It is a great way to make this easier for everyone—and it's not just about making it easier for people who are having trouble understanding each other. It's also about making life easier for humans who have to do tedious tasks repeatedly, like entering numbers into spreadsheets or filing papers in folders. The world is full of AI applications, but most aren't very smart. Narrow AI, also called weak AI or narrow AI, is a type of artificial intelligence specializing in one particular task. It's what you're using every time you look at a recommendation engine like Amazon's "People who bought this also bought" feature—the system determines what products are most likely to appeal to you based on your past purchases. It's also used in other commercial applications, including speech recognition and translation software. It's what makes Siri so useful: She can tell you the weather by asking her servers for your location and then pulling up an appropriate forecast based on that information. However, as learning algorithms deepen, the applications of narrow AI are becoming more layered and sophisticated—and they're starting to look like accurate intelligence!
