What Is Multi-Chip Module (MCM)?
Multi-chip modules are the future of electronics. They're a bunch of chips that work together as one device. That means you can run an entire function with just one component instead of putting together all the individual parts yourself. If you've ever had to solder stuff together, you know what a nightmare that can be! Especially if you're trying to make something minimal and delicate. With a multi-chip module, all those tiny pieces will snap into their own. You don't have to worry about making connections between components or finding a way to hold them together while working on them. MCMs can be manufactured using substrate technology, die-to-attach and bonding technology, and encapsulation technology. Substrate technology attaches individual components to a base material, such as a silicon wafer. Die to attach and bonding technology uses adhesive materials to attach the chip to other components or the molding compound that will hold it in place. Encapsulation technology involves placing a coating over the entire chip once assembled, which protects it from damage during manufacturing and makes it possible for electrical connections to be made with wires or solder tags. Plus, an MCM can reduce the size of your device considerably! Imagine how much space would be saved if every single component in your TV or phone was just one little thing instead of several big ones. You could probably fit all of them into your pocket! MCMs are great for a lot of things. They're especially good at making you look great, with high-power communication devices, servers, high-density single-module computers and wearables. They're also great for your skin, with portable electronics and space avionics. In fact, MCMs are so versatile that they can be used in RF wireless modules and power amplifiers for just about anything!
