What Is Intel 8008?
When it comes to microprocessors, Intel 8008 is the man. Although it has been around since 1972 when it was first released, keep that from fooling you; this CPU still packs a punch. The Intel 8008 was a pioneering microprocessor that enabled many of today's convenient conveniences. Intel created it, and its architecture featured an enormous 8 bits. If you're unfamiliar with this term, it could simultaneously handle 8 bits of data. Although this may seem like little now, it was a significant event in its day. Let's talk in industry terms now. While the Intel 8008's 500 kHz clock speed may seem sluggish today, it was swift compared to other computers at the time. It could also access up to 16 kilobytes of memory because of its 14-bit address bus. It could run at a rate of about 200,000 instructions per second and featured 16 general-purpose registers for storing data and programs. All in all, not bad for an 8-bit CPU, eh? The versatility of the Intel 8008 was one of its most appealing features. It found its way into everything from the Apollo Guidance Computer, which helped navigate the Apollo 11 spacecraft to the moon, to calculators and traffic lights. This CPU could do it all, serving in a variety of capacities. The instruction set was another feature that set the Intel 8008 apart. The Intel 8008 had a sizable collection of instructions, or "instruction set," that it could follow. It could undertake various tasks because of the over 40 commands it could follow. Since the Intel 8008 was an early example of a modern microprocessor, it is rightly held in high regard. Although faster and more potent than modern processors, a technological breakthrough opened the way for many modern conveniences. Thank the Intel 8008 the next time you use a computer, smartphone, or another electronic device.
