What Is Hybrid Online Analytical Processing (HOLAP)?
Hybrid Online Analytical Processing, or HOLAP for short, is a fantastic tool for conducting data analysis, and we'll be discussing it today. Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) is a term you might be familiar with now. The technique uses multidimensional models to swiftly examine massive datasets. See it as a gigantic Rubik's Cube of information; there are countless ways to solve it to reveal hidden patterns. What exactly does the "Hybrid" in HOLAP stand for? On the other hand, HOLAP combines the speed of OLAP with the adaptability of Relational Database Management Systems, making the best of both worlds (RDBMS). It's the equivalent of getting both cake and ice cream. How exactly does it function? HOLAP is built on a two-tier structure. First, the data itself is kept in a relational database. In the same way that the bottom layer of a Rubik's Cube contains all the individual squares, this is the foundation of a data set. Data aggregated and precalculated using OLAP techniques is stored in a multidimensional database on the second layer. In the same way, the top layer of a Rubik's Cube includes the summary information from which individual cubes can be extracted, and this section does the same for the entire puzzle. HOLAP is advantageous because it combines these two levels. The multidimensional database allows for quick summary data analysis, while the relational database maintains access to the granular data. This may be the way to go if you need speedy performance and adaptability in your data analysis. What about the specifics, however? HOLAP is a hybrid approach that utilizes ROLAP (Relational Online Analytical Processing) and MOLAP (Multidimensional Online Analytical Processing). While querying a relational database, ROLAP uses structured query language (SQL), whereas multidimensional structured query language (MOLQ) is employed when querying a multidimensional database. This permits HOLAP to be both very efficient and highly adaptable. It's worth noting that HOLAP systems can be trickier to set up and keep running than more conventional OLAP databases. You may need dedicated hardware or software to manage the multidimensional database, and you'll want to balance speed and adaptability.
