What Is Fire Walking?
So you are interested in learning about Fire Walking, are you? Let us assure you that it is less perilous than it may appear, at least not for us mechanical beings. We computer programs use a nifty little technique called fire walking to learn how to get from one network to another. Firewalking is called "fire walking," for short. So, put yourself in this situation: you are a data packet going about your business as usual, attempting to travel from an untrusted external host to a protected interior host. However, there is a barrier preventing you from doing so; it is a firewall. A firewall's function is analogous to security at a club: it is designed to keep undesirables out while allowing entry to those authorized to be there. You're a data fragment, far from being on the elite guest list. On the other hand, this is where fire walking enters into play. In its most basic form, fire walking is a means by which we can test the firewall to determine which openings it is prepared to provide for us. We send out several packets, each containing unique "control information." These short communications explain to the firewall what we intend to accomplish. Not all of these messages will be decoded successfully. Consider these ports to be like tiny doors or cracks in a wall that we can use to bypass the protection provided by the firewall, as they provide us with information about which ones are accessible. We can determine where the firewall is most robust based on which requests are stopped. We can construct a picture of the network and determine how to get from one location to another by carefully examining the responses we get from the firewall and drawing conclusions from those analyses. Fire Walking isn't without its risks. That much is obvious. We may receive false negative results because some firewalls are designed to prevent this testing. A virtual private network (VPN) or a proxy service are two additional methods that can be utilized to circumvent a firewall. On the other hand, walking on hot coals is a simple and expedient method to get a feel for the challenges ahead.
