What Is EVO:RAIL?
So, imagine you're building a data center and need all the resources that go with it: computing, storage, and networking. Usually, you'd have to buy separate pieces of hardware for each of those things and then figure out how to make them all work together. With EVO: RAIL, VMware has made it easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy by putting all those resources into one single unit of deployment. That unit is called a 2U unit, which means it's two rack units high. Inside that unit, you'll find four independent physical nodes. When we say "nodes," we're talking about computers designed to work together in a cluster. When we say "independent," we mean that each node can operate independently without interfering with the others. Wait, there's more! EVO: RAIL is also a scalable software-defined data center (SDDC) building block. "Scalable" means you can add more resources to it as your needs grow. "Software-defined" means that the resources are managed by software rather than hardware. "Data center building block" implies that EVO: RAIL is a fundamental component of a more extensive data center infrastructure. Now, let's talk about some of the technical keywords involved in EVO: RAIL. One of the most important is "hyper-converged." It refers to EVO: RAIL's resources are combined into a single unit. Another key term is "appliance," which means that it's a pre-built, self-contained system that you can plug in and start using. Of course, there's "HCIA," which stands for Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Appliance, which is just a fancy way of saying that it's a pre-built system that combines all your data center resources into one unit. So, to sum up: EVO: RAIL is a 2U unit that contains four independent physical nodes, each of which can operate independently without interfering with the others. It's a scalable software-defined data center (SDDC) building block that combines computing, storage, and networking resources into a single deployment unit. A Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Appliance (HCIA) makes building and managing your data center infrastructure easy. Whew! That was a mouthful!
