What Is Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP)?
Airplanes, trains, automobiles... no matter how you get from place to place, you're a target for an electromagnetic pulse. The problem is that most of us need to prepare for this cataclysmic event. Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is the defense shield in the form of highly conductive copper socks to help protect your feet from the harshness of modern civilization. This can damage electronic components by short-circuiting them. An electromagnetic pulse is a natural phenomenon, with lightning being the most common cause of relatively low-energy pulses that cause localized electrical surges and short circuits in unshielded devices. The Sun produces them by sending out flares. If a nuclear bomb explodes above the ground, it can create a large EMP that spreads out into the atmosphere and affects a wide area over the line of sight of the explosion. Luckily, these surges are typically only harmful to electronic equipment at deficient levels, such as causing corrupted data and crosstalk between wired media. Electric motors generate train pulses as the internal contacts rotate. Even the constant switching of digital circuitry causes low-level interference that may still be detrimental to other electronic components in its vicinity. You know why engineers consider shielding a significant part of electronic hardware design!
