What Is Data Mining?
Data mining. It's like panning for gold, except instead of water, you're using a computer to look for the gold, and instead of a pan, you're using an algorithm to do it. The idea is that data mining algorithms are like little prospectors constantly on the hunt for gold in all your existing data. They'll sift through it and find all kinds of hidden patterns and insights about what's been going on in your company: how customers are behaving, what products they're buying, whether or not you should change up your marketing strategies or focus more on social media ads. Once these algorithms have figured out what's going on in your business, they can turn those findings into useful information that helps make better decisions that help cut costs, increase revenue, or better serve customers or clients. Data mining is discovering hidden patterns and relationships in existing data. It's a way for businesses to get a better understanding of their customers, products, and processes. There are three types of data that companies use to conduct data mining: transactional, non-operational, and metadata. Transactional data is stuff like sales data and inventory information. Non-operational data is used for forecasting. For example, what will happen if we change this price? Metadata is concerned with the logical design of databases (e.g., how do we organize all these different bits of information?). Data mining can be used to discover patterns in your company's customer demographics, your products' pricing strategies, or your supply chain operations. Data mining is one of the essential parts of business intelligence because it allows you to find patterns in your data that might not be immediately apparent at first glance patterns that could help you make smarter decisions about how best to proceed with your business strategy going forward!
