What Is Broadcasting?

In broadcasting, you don't just send your message to one person. You send it to everyone. Broadcasting when everyone hears your thoughts. Broadcasting is the simultaneous transmission of the same message to multiple recipients. Broadcasting occurs when all network devices receive a transmitted data packet. It's like when you're at a party telling a joke, and everyone laughs—that's broadcasting. In this case, it's happening over the internet instead of in real life. It differs from unicasting because unicasting sends one copy of the information to one recipient, while multicasting sends one copy to multiple recipients. In contrast to multicasting, each network device receives a copy of the same data. Internet Service Providers often employ broadcasting to distribute IP addresses to new customers. When a computer boots up, it requests an IP address from the router or modem. Another device likely uses the IP address on the network, so the modem or router will then broadcast a request for the IP address to be returned. Once the modem or router receives the IP address, it will publish it to the computer. Broadcasts are often used for network discovery or announcements. For example, a company hiring many new employees might use a broadcast email to notify all employees of the date and time of the hiring event. Broadcasts are also used to send multicast or multicast traffic, data sent to a subset of network devices (such as a network video stream). Multicast and broadcast traffic is often sent to a specific network address — such as a network address for all devices or a multicast address that only a subset of devices can receive. Broadcasting is like a big party, where everyone is invited and brings their food. But as the party gets more extensive and more people come, it's harder to get around and harder to hear what's going on.
