Popular in the '60s and '70s, 'Blue Boxes' enabled consumers to make long-distance phone calls at no cost. That's correct, and it's free. The Blue Box mimicked the noises emitted by the telephone network's hardware by playing a precise sequence of tones. Phreaking was the term for this practice, and a "phreaker" used a Blue Box. During their time at university, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs (yes, that Steve Jobs!) came up with the idea for the Blue Box, which they would later use to launch Apple Inc. They were just two tech-savvy guys named Steve who loved delving into the inner workings of whatever they touched. They were very curious about the telephone network and how it functioned. In the 1960s, audible tones were employed to direct the switches that connected calls on the telephone network based on analog technology.
