A bottleneck is when you have data coming, but your network can't handle all that data simultaneously. For example, suppose you're trying to download two files simultaneously, one at 1Mb/s and another at 10Mb/s. In that case, you'll experience a significant delay when it comes time for them both to transfer over your 100Mb/s connection. This delay will occur because your internet connection only has room for 100Mb/s of data. If more than that attempt come through at once, it will cause some slowdown or delay in communication. A bottleneck is when your system is getting backed up, and you can't get through. Think of a bottleneck as a traffic jam on the highway. When two lanes go in opposite directions, but only one is passable, you're in for a long wait. When your system is bottlenecking, you're waiting for data to transfer through narrow pipes at maximum speed, but the lines are complete and can't accommodate more data.
