YouTube Will Count Video Views From The First Frame Starting August 24

Overall Rating

YouTube is changing how it counts public video views from August 24, 2026, registering a view as soon as playback begins across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams, while monetization and YouTube Partner Program eligibility will continue using engagement-based metrics.

TL;DR

  • YouTube will count a public view from the moment a video begins playing, starting August 24, 2026.
  • The standard will apply globally across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams.
  • Creator earnings and YouTube Partner Program eligibility will remain tied to engaged or qualified viewing metrics rather than the new public view count.

YouTube Is Standardizing Views Across Video Formats

Beginning August 24, YouTube will count a public view from the moment a video starts playing, effectively making the first frame enough to register a view. The change brings long-form videos and live streams in line with the view-counting approach already used for YouTube Shorts.

As reported by 9to5Google, YouTube said it previously used different view-counting systems depending on the video format. The company said, “we’ve heard that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure,” explaining that the update is intended to create consistency across the platform.

YouTube previously changed how Shorts views were counted on March 31, 2025, recording a view whenever a Short started playing or replaying without requiring a minimum watch time. The August 2026 change extends that broader approach across YouTube's video formats.

TechCrunch noted that YouTube never publicly disclosed the exact amount of viewing time previously required for a standard video to register a view, although a roughly 30-second threshold was widely understood outside the company. This means the new policy should not be interpreted as YouTube officially replacing a confirmed 30-second rule.

Public Views And Monetization Will Remain Separate

The most important distinction for creators is that the higher public view count will not automatically translate into higher earnings.

YouTube’s Help documentation confirms that YouTube Partner Program earnings will continue to use “engaged Shorts views” and “engaged watch hours.” Eligibility will similarly remain based on “qualified Shorts views” and “qualified watch hours,” meaning simply starting a video will not be enough to influence these monetization measurements.

Search Engine Journal also highlighted this separation, reporting that YouTube will retain Engaged Views as an analytics metric while the public-facing view counter adopts the new standard. In practice, this makes the public view number more representative of exposure, while watch time and engagement metrics remain important indicators of whether viewers actually stayed with the content.

What The Change Means For Creators And Brands

Creators are likely to see public view counts rise faster after the new system takes effect. 9to5Google reported that YouTube expects the standardized metric to provide creators with a clearer picture of their overall exposure and help them communicate their scale to brand partners and sponsors.

However, TechCrunch noted that a view counted from the start of playback could make the public number less useful on its own for judging how strongly viewers engaged with a video. Search Engine Journal similarly noted that watch time and Engaged Views will become more useful when distinguishing initial exposure from sustained attention.

So, while YouTube videos may soon display larger view totals more quickly, creators, advertisers and marketers will still need to look beyond that public number to understand how much attention a video actually earned.
